SESSION: S07: Hands-on Practical Hybrid Parallel Application Performance Engineering

EVENT TYPE: Tutorial

DATE: Sunday, 11/13, 8:30AM - 5:00PM

PRESENTERS: Markus Geimer, Andreas Knuepfer, Sameer Shende, Brian Wylie

ROOM: TCC 202

ABSTRACT:
This tutorial presents state-of-the-art performance tools for leading-edge HPC systems, demonstrating their use for performance engineering of effective scientific applications based on standard MPI or OpenMP, and now common mixed-mode parallelizations such as MPI+OpenMP and MPI+OpenCL/CUDA. Parallel performance toolsets from the Virtual Institute – High Productivity Supercomputing (VI-HPS) are introduced: Scalasca, Vampir and TAU. We cover all aspects of performance engineering practice, including instrumentation, measurement (profiling and tracing, timing and PAPI hardware counters), data storage, analysis, and visualization. Emphasis is placed on how tools can be used in combination for identifying performance problems and investigating optimization alternatives, illustrated with case studies using selected application codes. Prominent are hands-on exercises with participants' notebook computers using a Linux live disk image (bootable from provided DVD or USB stick) containing all of the tools, which will help to prepare participants to diagnose and locate performance bottlenecks in their own parallel applications.
